2024 Client Project - Motion - Animation

Dane Hamblin:
Artist Branding

Client Introduction: Dane Hamblin, a talented visual artist, with a focus on watercolour and oil paintings. He approached me seeking a rebranding to elevate his artistic identity and better connect with his target audience. Despite possessing a unique artistic style, Dane felt that his current brand did not effectively communicate a professional image, leading to a disconnect with potential clients and limited exposure in the art community.

Project Overview

Inconsistent Branding:
Dane's existing brand lacked consistency across various platforms, including his website, social media, and promotional materials. This inconsistency hindered the establishment of a recognizable and memorable brand identity.

Target Audience Understanding: There was a lack of clarity regarding Dane's target audience. Understanding the demographics, interests, and preferences of his potential clients was crucial for crafting a brand that resonated with them.

Limited Online Presence: Dane's online presence was not fully optimized. The website was outdated, and social media accounts were not effectively utilized to showcase his portfolio and engage with the audience.

Explainer Video

I illustrated and animated a short 1 minute video, quickly explaining how Dane Hamblin creates an oil painting in his studio.

Choosing the Painting

I was given the liberty to choose the painting to use for animation.
I decided to choose this piece titled "Majestic" which is a 15" x 15" oil painting of a laundromat in old Ottawa south, Canada. Using reference images and my knowledge of the work, I created simple illustrations of the major steps in the process.

Character Design

After doing some research and understanding my limitations at the time, I came up with this simple caricature of Dane that I could rig and animate easily with fluid motion.

Challenges

Making the character inviting and nice to look at while matching the background illustrations was difficult and I think I could have simplified the other illustrations a bit more to create a cohesive look.

Using realistic lighting was a positive and negative. I think it adds a lot of visual interest to the scenes but doesn't quite match the style. I would have experimented more with solutions for this if I had more time.
